How to Get Back on Track After Missing a Habit

Missed a habit? Choose your next chance to restart and make one adjustment based on what got in the way.

You missed your Tuesday walk. By Thursday, it feels like the whole week is off. Start with Thursday’s walk. Decide when you’ll leave, where you’ll go, and how long you have. Tuesday can tell you something about your plan, but it doesn’t have to decide what you do today.

Find the reason you missed it

Be specific. “I lost discipline” gives you little to work with. “My Tuesday meeting ran into lunch” gives you a scheduling problem. You could walk before the meeting, shorten the route, or move that session to Wednesday.

If you had the time but still skipped it, look at the first action. Maybe your walking shoes were in the car. Maybe you hadn’t decided on a route and spent your break scrolling. Pick one change that addresses what happened.

Restart at a size that fits today

If you normally walk for 30 minutes and have ten today, take the ten-minute route. If you missed a reading session, open the book and read to the end of the page. Keep the next attempt small enough to fit the time you actually have.

After you finish, write down the next session. That gives the restart somewhere to go. You’ve gone for a walk today, and you know when you’ll go again.

Write your restart plan. At ___, I’ll do ___ for ___ minutes. To make it easier, I’ll prepare ___ beforehand.
